Whenever we look at one country through the eyes of another we may learn as much about the former as we do about the latter. The image created may change in time, dependent on the state of affairs in one of the other. America has been for decades, indeed, for close to four centuries, the New World, the Promised Land – initially for individual adventurers, and later for larger numbers who decided to seek better conditions and opportunities for life and more freedom for religious and political activities, but the range of representations has been growing ever wider. The articles in the present volume explore the images and representations of America in the non-American media (newspapers, magazines, journals, film, television, internet).
