Assimilation – A Good or Bad Word? – ed. M. Peprník

What will the newcomers (more than a million every year) accommodate to, if anything? What is the reason for their decision to go to the United States? Do they want to become citizens of the country? Is the American Dream still attractive for people from the rest of the world? Can the American society manage to accept and integrate the masses of newcomers? What language will the country speak in the future? Will ethnicity matter in defining American culture and literature? These are the questions usually asked and answered by sociologists but it must not be forgotten that literature and art feeds in life and experience and has the ambition… Read More

The Philosophical Baroque On Autopoietic Modernities – Erik S. Roraback

In his pioneering study The Philosophical Baroque: On Autopoietic Modernities, Erik S. Roraback argues that modern culture, contemplated over its four-century history, resembles nothing so much as the pearl famously described, by periodizers of old, as irregular, barroco. Reframing modernity as a multi-century baroque, Roraback steeps texts by Shakespeare, Henry James, Joyce, and Pynchon in systems theory and the ideas of philosophers of language and culture from Leibniz to such dynamic contemporaries as Luhmann, Benjamin, Blanchot, Deleuze and Guattari, Lacan, and Žižek. The resulting brew, high in intellectual caffeine, will interest all who take an interest in cultural modernity—indeed, all who recognize that “modernity” was (and remains) a congeries of… Read More

The Dialectics of Late Capital and Power: James, Balzac and Critical Theory – Erik S. Roraback

This essay offers up a provocative new theoretical tack on the topic area of the dialectic of capital, the dialectic of cruelty, and the dialectic of power and of their intricate and self-differential inter-relationships and forms of being, under late capitalism, as delineated in selected narratives of two major Occidental novelists, Henry James and his key paper friend, Honoré de Balzac; it does so from a genuinely inter-disciplinary perspective that draws from heterogeneous waves of critical theory broadly conceived, having thus something to say to contemporary culture both of general and of academic interest alike. Key concepts elucidated and fleshed out in the work for the first time in a… Read More

Autoři zahrnutí do antologie: Fred Chappell, Lewis Nordan, Richard Ford, Flannery O’Connorová, Katherine Anne Porterová, Eudora Weltyová, Peter Taylor,… Read More

Jewishness as Humanism in Bernard Malamud’s Fiction – Michaela Náhliková

B. Malamud started to publish his stories in the 1940s, a time which required Jews to take a standpoint, including even those had not grown up in Jewish communities or were not interested in their roots. B.Malamud was one of them. In his stories he tried to picture postwar America and show what it takes to be a Mensch and an outsider in America. The read his books, no deep knowledge of Judaism or Jewish culture is required. But the characters are marked by their cultural history, which Malamud uses symbolically as a drama of all mankind. The aim of this study is to present and analyze how Bernard Malamud… Read More

The South from Elsewhere – Marcel Arbeit (ed.)

“Elsewhere” in the title of the present volume refers both to its subject and its contributors, seven European scholars from four countries: the Czech Republic, France, Germany, and Spain. They try to benefit from their foreign status, which allows them to see all the historical, social, and cultural battles of the South from a distance and at the same time to read them, explicitly or implicitly, through their own histories and cultures. The are interested in the experience of southern writers outside their home region, as well as the inspirations they found outside the South, be it in Europe, Latin America, or Asia, but which extend their discussion to the… Read More
